LuW02: Lehre und Wehre in English (downloads) (Part 2 of ?)

      This continues from the Introduction in Part 1. — With the completion of the projects for Der Lutheraner (Walther years and post-Walther years), and the St. Louis Edition of Luther's Works, I wanted to complete the trilogy of the greatest publications of the Old Missouri Synod with its main journal of theology, Lehre und Wehre.   After nearly 5 months of work, that project is now completed and a DeepL translation into English now makes this journal, all 75 volumes, available to English speakers, like me. Now Concordia Seminary's Concordia Journal, the journal claiming to be its successor, can be easily compared to its predecessor to determine if it is actually its true successor or not.

      The Walther years are from 1855 to 1887, volumes 1—43, then began Prof. Franz Pieper's tenure as the leader until the journal's end in 1929.  The journal expanded from 384 pages to 576 pages in 1904, then returned to 384 pages in 1921 until its end in 1929. Profs. A. L. Graebner, Eduard Pardieck, Friedrich Bente, among others, were editors and major contributors in the years after Walther.  — I did not, as I did with Der Lutheraner, manually add the search term "[Walther]" to all of his writings so one can only search for "W." or "Walther" to find him and that will yield many false results.  However Pieper's signature "F. P." (and "Pieper") will yield all of his writings.

      The "Technical notes" and "DeepL Translator mistranslations" given for the Der Lutheraner project also apply to this Lehre und Wehre project. I did not take the time in most cases to emphasize the digitized words that were emphasized by spaced lettering ("Sperrdruck") in the original German printed text. There are places in the text that I wish I had proofed more closely due to the garbled translation. Yet in most cases the translated text is understandable. The essays that make heavy use of Latin, Greek, and/or Hebrew may be exceptions in certain portions.  Not all of the printed Table of Contents were scanned or were available as with the Der Lutheraner project.  ——  If any errors in these downloads are found, I would appreciate a notice of it so that I may immediately correct it. (Email me at BackToLuther@gmail.com.)

      The German text Table of Contents for all 75 volumes was previously published in 2018 (Archive). This was a product of not only the scanned pages, but also my manual research.  Now it is available in English translation HERE on Archive.  This is the best way to research the content of all volumes, although it does not cover the extensive items in the "Church News" sections.

      The OCR German text files are available in a ZIP file HERE. NOTE: these are split files to accommodate the 1 million (1000k) character limit in the DeepL document translator. That means these split files are immediately available to send to the DeepL Translator again for other languages besides English. The individual downloadable German text files in the above table are not split, but intact.

      NOTES: Where Der Lutheraner had many articles on Missions, Lehre und Wehre was mainly focused on doctrine and the defense of it. Lehre und Wehre gave more extensive coverage of church news, particularly in America and Germany, but also other foreign countries.

Why read Lehre und Wehre?  

      An official of the German state church gives us a hint. In vol. 8 (1862), p. 317, the "Church News" section quoted a report from a German religious paper on the Missouri Synod.  Among other things, it was stated that "The papers of the Missourians published in the [American] West, Lehre und Wehre and Der Lutheraner, are also diligently read by the laity in the [American] East…" This statement by a prominent state church official shows that the Germans considered it notable that Missouri's laity, not just the pastors and theologians, read Missouri's papers. One may conclude from this that they, the Germans, wished it was also true of their people with their papers.
